Presentation Formats

We have five presentation formats available. At the time of submission you will be able to nominate whether you would prefer a poster and/or oral presentation, or whether you would like to enter the 3 minute thesis competition. The Scientific Committee will offer positions within the different parts of the program based on quality of submissions, interest to our audience and alignment with conference themes.

Author Registration Deadline
9 October 2024

The presentation platforms available are:

  • Long Oral Presentation (15 minutes, with 3 minutes for questions): A select number of high-quality submissions will be offered long oral presentations within concurrent themed sessions.
  • “5x5” short oral (5 minutes, 5 slides, no time allocation for questions): Presenters share their work in a 5 minute oral presentation, with no more than 5 slides. These presentations will be integrated with long orals in themed sessions. Combined questions period at conclusion of each set of 5 talks.

  • Lightning Talk "3x3": 3 minute oral presentation with a maximum of 3 slides (not including your title slide). Questions will not be taken for “3x3” presentations. Due to the brief nature of these presentations, only one presenting author is permitted. Please advise HSR2024@eventstudio.com.au if you would like to make a change to the presenting author listed in the preliminary program.
  • 3 Minute Thesis Competition: This popular event is limited to current students or recent graduates of higher degrees by research. Entrants present their thesis (in part or whole, in progress or completed) in strictly 3 minutes with a single power point slide. 3MT entrants may also be considered for inclusion in other parts of the program (using the same or separate abstract submission).  Please see below for further information.
  • Poster: Presenters will share their work as a poster. The format for posters is printed. There will be quick poster-pitch as you stand by your poster (no slides) on the designated poster timeslot in the program.
  • Symposium: The opportunity is available to request that your presentation be considered as one of a group of 4-6 abstracts to be presented orally within a pre-planned, grouped symposium. Symposia sessions run for 60-90 minutes and incorporate a series of co-ordinated presentations within a theme. Symposia presenters are free to allocate the time within their session as they choose, but are encouraged to include time for questions and discussion.
*Indicating you would like your presentation to be considered as part of a symposium does not preclude your abstract from being accepted as a Long Oral Presentation should the symposium in total not be accepted. Please see below for further information.

3 Minute Thesis Competition

Entrants in the 3MT competition present their thesis (in part or whole, in progress or completed) in strictly 3 minutes with a single power point slide. Entrants will compete for the title of Best Presentation from our panel of judges, and a People’s Choice Award. The 3MT competition regularly draws a large audience and is a great way for emerging researchers to showcase their work. In the past we have been able to accommodate most, if not all, 3MT submissions.

3MT entrants can also submit their work in other parts of the program. However, we recommend tailoring your abstract appropriately (see preparation instructions below) and submitting separately through the submission platform using your preferred presentation category.

Symposium Submissions

A limited number of sessions will be made available for groups of presentations to be presented together under a common theme, as a pre-planned symposium.
Abstracts that are submitted as part of an unsuccessful symposium submission will be considered for inclusion as individual papers in the other sections nominated during the submission process.

If you would like to propose a symposium:

STEP 1. Submit each of the abstracts separately using the abstract submission portal.

STEP 2. During the submission process for each abstract, ensure you have indicated that you would like the abstract to be considered as part of the symposium application on the ‘Sub-Theme and Symposium' tab. Please also indicate the presentation type that you are willing to accept in the case that the symposium application is unsuccessful and the abstract is accepted for a stand alone presentation.

STEP 3. Complete the Symposium Submission Form here. Provide the details of each presentation (symposium designed for 4-6 abstracts), a 150 word summary of the overall session and justification for why the presentations should be linked as a Symposium. Closing date for Symposium Submission is 18th June 2024

Preparing and Submitting your Abstract

Abstracts are limited to 300 words and should be structured using subheadings such as:

  • Introduction/Background
  • Method
  • Results/Findings
  • Implications/Key Message

Note: Submissions for the 3 minute thesis competition ONLY can be presented as a free text outline without subheadings if preferred.

To assist with submission, we have prepared the below template for authors.

ABSTRACT TEMPLATE

ECR Researchers

You will be asked to indicate at the time of submission if you identify as an Early Career Researcher (ECR) to determine eligibility for ECR award categories. In the health services research community there are a wide range of career pathways. ECR status is therefore based on self–identification. As a guide, researchers up to 5 years post PhD (accounting for career disruptions), or novice clinician researchers can comfortably be considered early career, as can experience clinicians who are emerging researchers.

Describing Your Research

You will be asked during the submission process to select the setting, method and population (demographic and health condition) which best describes the topic of your presentation. This information will assist in allocating abstracts to appropriate reviewers and programming the conference sessions. Please select the best option from each list.

You can select “mixed/not relevant” for any domain that is not relevant to your topic, or “other” if none of the options provided describe your project. An optional text response box is available where you can enter your own key words if appropriate descriptors for your work were not available in the other drop down lists.

Abstract Submission Instructions

Please submit a maximum 300 word abstract  of your proposed session that aligns with one of the conference sub-themes. Your abstract should focus on the core content of the proposed session and clearly align with your chosen sub-theme.

Please read through the submission information and instructions listed above before preparing your abstract:

Step 1: Write your abstract following all instructions on this website.
Step 2: Click on the below SUBMIT button to enter the HSR 2024 Presentation/Abstract Submission Portal and follow the prompts.

Who submits the abstract?

The Presenting Author must submit the abstract and will act as the main point of contact for the abstract with organisers.

Once you enter the online submission portal, start by creating an account. Upon successful submission of the abstract a confirmation email will be sent to the Presenting Author.

If you have not received a confirmation email, please check that your abstract is not left in draft and is fully submitted by logging back into the portal and checking on the Edit/View Abstracts page.

How to Edit a Submitted Abstract?
You can save your submission as a draft and return to edit the submission at a later point. It is important to note that once it has been submitted the abstract cannot be edited after the abstract submission deadline. Ensure that your abstract is not left in draft as it will not be reviewed.

Authors will be notified of their abstract submission status on: Early September 2024.

Presentation Format:

The Conference Committees reserve the right to decide the format of presentation on the basis of time and space available.
