Workshop: First Nations experiences of health research and the PhD journey

The Health Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand are delighted to be partnering with Djurali Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research and Education at Macquarie University to present a pre-conference workshop for our First Nations researchers and students. This half-day workshop will provide a platform for Indigenous delegates to come together in a supportive environment and to listen to various First Nations experiences from across the health services research continuum.

Program and Speakers:

Honorary Associate Professor Boe Rambaldini, from Macquarie University Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, the Walanga Muru Health Research Team, and Bundjalung Elder will Chair the workshop.

Dr Carmen Parter, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland Poche Centre for Indigenous Health will outline the results of her recent PhD titled: Yarning about the cultural determinants of health: Research findings about implementing Indigenous peoples’ cultures.

Ms Cara Cross, PhD Student at the University of Newcastle will describe her thesis ‘Our Country, our healer: Aboriginal Apothecaries of Burning Mountain’ which historicises the production and use of mineral medicine derived from Burning Mountain in Wonnarua Country, issuing a powerful call for the recognition of Indigenous innovation as cultural heritage.

Associate Professor John Gilroy, Deputy Director Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research, DVC-Research, The University of Sydney will speak on mentoring and supervising HDR students and developing grants for health services research projects.

 

After each presentation there will be time for questions and discussion. There will also be time made for networking part way through the program and at the end of the workshop. Afternoon tea will be provided.

Please note this Workshop is for First Nations conference delegates only. The workshop is supported by the Conference Committee and registration is free
