Professor Jennifer Cleland
Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University

Recipient of the 2024 Karolinska Institutet Prize in Medical Education Editor-in-Chief, Medical Teacher

Jennifer Cleland, PhD, is President’s Chair in Medical Education and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Digital Education and Digital Health, Lee Kong Chian (LKC) School of Medicine, Singapore.  She is also Wade Professor of Surgical Education, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.  From 1st January 2025, she will be Editor-in-Chief of Medical Teacher.

Between 2011 and 2020, she was inaugural John Simpson Chair of Medical Education Research at the University of Aberdeen, UK.

Dr Cleland’s scholarship has significantly influenced medical education and training globally. Her innovative research, leadership and mentorship has been pivotal in addressing key issues such as equity, diversity, and inclusivity in student selection and training effectiveness. She has advanced medical education research as a scientific discipline, contributing to improved educational practices and better healthcare outcomes. 

She has nearly 300 high-impact publications, two books (one translated into Chinese), 26 book chapters, and hundreds of peer-reviewed and invited presentations around the world. She was the first woman to win the Ian Hart International Award for Innovation in Medical Education (2022) and the second woman to win the highest prize in her field, the Karolinska Institutet Prize in Medical Education (2024).  She became a Fellow, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2018, and Associate Fellow, Faculty of Surgical Educators, in 2021.  She received the President’s Medal from the Association for the Study of Medical Education in 2018.  She has been honoured with honorary professorial/external faculty appointments from seven universities across four continents, including The Wilson Centre, Canada, and Maastricht University, The Netherlands. 


Associate Professor Daniel Capurro
The University of Melbourne 

I am a Medical Doctor, trained in Internal Medicine, and hold a PhD in Biomedical and Health Informatics from the University of Washington in Seattle. I am the Deputy Director of the Centre for Digital Transformation of health where I co-lead the Digital health Validitron (a pipeline to validate digital health innovations in a way similar to what happens with drugs and vaccines) and the Data Science stream. My main interest is to develop methods to improve the use of clinical data for research. This includes the use of electronic health records and the data collected in them, using artificial intelligence to predict some diseases and complications and process mining to understand the best ways to organize care.


Professor Sandra Thompson 

The University of Western Australia

Dr Sandra Thompson is a public health physician with experience in clinical practice, public health, research, planning and policy development, and program management in multiple Australian jurisdictions. She has been the Director of the Western Australian Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) and Professor of Rural Health at the University of Western Australia since February 2010. Her research spans many areas of health, and are particularly centred around health disparities, Aboriginal health, rural health, and health of vulnerable groups such as new migrants and refugees. 


Professor Tim Wilkinson 

The University of Otago 

Tim Wilkinson MBChB, MD, MClinEd, PhD, FRACP, FRCP, FANZHPE FAMEE is professor of medicine and medical education at the Otago Medical school.  He was acting Dean 2023-2025 and the MBChB programme director 2013-2021. His research interests are assessment of clinical competence and performance, workplace learning, selection into medical school, career paths, and professionalism. In 2002 he was an inaugural winner of the Minister of Education / NZQA Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award (for sustained excellence in tertiary teaching).  In 2016 he was awarded the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators highest award for outstanding achievement in the field of health professional education in Australia, New Zealand and internationally.  He holds editorship roles on three medical education journals. He also works as a consultant physician in geriatric medicine.
