Abass Alavi, MD, MD (Hon), PhD (Hon), DSc (Hon)
Abass Alavi is an internationally renowned physician scientist who has developed novel techniques that have shaped the evolution of molecular imaging. Among his accomplishments, the introduction of 18F-FDG- PET has truly revolutionized the field medicine worldwide. The impact of using FDG-PET along with CT and MRI is unparalleled by any other technique in recent history. He has received many awards for his outstanding contributions, including the Benedict Cassen Prize by the Society of Nuclear Medicine in 2012. This prize is given to those whose efforts have led to a major advancement in basic or clinical nuclear medicine science. Dr. Alavi is currently a Professor of Radiology and Neurology, Director of Research Education in Radiology, and Associate Director of Center for the Study of Aging at the University of Pennsylvania.
