PREPARING YOUR POSTER

Poster Presentation Guidelines

A poster should be a visual representation of your work in a format that attracts people and can be read from a distance of 2-3m. Certainly, the main idea should be identifiable from 2-3m.

“Each poster has about 10 seconds to stimulate scientific interest” (D Lindsay 2011). Catch the eye, make a statement, justify with data, then stimulate the onlooker to find out more by starting a discussion with you -the author.

Plan

  • Customise the layout of your poster based on the content of your paper but don’t just copy slabs of text.
  • Arrange into sections so the order to read is clear when read from top left to bottom right.
  • Be generous with white space. Try not to overcrowd the poster.
  • Test your poster layout by printing on an A4 first. Make sure the poster can be easily read.
  • Remember a picture (including graph or diagram) tells a thousand words.
  • Blocks of text should not exceed 3 paragraphs and ideally will just be one.
  • Stick to 2-3 theme colours. Black text on a white background is the easiest to read.
  • Don’t include references as people can read the paper to get those.
  • Avoid abbreviations, acronyms and jargon
  • Conclusions should not merely be summary statements, but should provide the onlooker with your interpretation of what the results mean.

Prepare

  • Size A0, portrait = 841mm wide x 1189mm tall
  • Your paper’s unique identification number followed by the title should be centred at the top. Authors should then be listed below the title with the presenting author’s email address.
  • We suggest font size 96-100 point for the title, 48 point for subheadings and 36 point for main text and  20 for footer text such as affiliations/acknowledgements
  • Top right hand corner should have a photo of the presenting author.  The photo helps to facilitate networking, which is a major aim of the conference, especially for students commencing their career.  Please use a current, professional photo.
  • Your organisation and sponsor logos can be included in the bottom right corner at an appropriate size not to interfere with your poster’s message.
  • Underline, italicise or colour can be used to highlight text, but don’t CAPITALISE text.
  • Use dot points, lists and tables but limit lists to 2-4 items
  • The poster should conclude with up to Three Key Learnings from the work, or these may be replaced with Three Key Issues in the case of posters on proposals or ‘possibilities’.
  • Check for spelling and grammar. Ask a colleague to review. Proof read again before printing.
