SECOND Call for NEW Abstracts

Delaying a conference inevitably leads to some challenges. The process for selection of abstracts has been adapted to accommodate abstracts that were peer reviewed and accepted in 2021, while also allowing the opportunity for inclusion of new submissions.

Abstracts submitted and accepted in 2021
Presenters who submitted an abstract for the 2021 conference have completed the review process and authors notified of the outcomes. If your abstract was accepted it will be carried over to the new 2022 conference program without needing further review.  However, if you would like to update (or withdraw) your abstract, you will have the opportunity to do so in early 2022, before the second call for new abstracts opens.

Second call for new abstracts
We will open a second call for new abstracts in March 2022 and welcome new submissions for oral or poster presentations and three-minute thesis entries. Please see below further details of the abstract submission process.

Presentation Formats

We have five presentation formats available. At the time of submission you will be able to nominate whether you would prefer a poster or oral presentation, or whether you would like to enter the 3 minute thesis competition. The Scientific Committee will offer positions within the different parts of the program based on quality of submissions, interest to our audience and alignment with conference themes.

The presentation platforms available are:

  • Long Oral Presentation (15 minutes): A select number of high quality submissions will be offered long oral presentations within concurrent themed sessions.
  • “5x5” short oral (5 minutes, 5 slides): Presenters share their work in a 5 minute oral presentation, with no more than 5 slides. These presentations will be integrated with long orals in themed sessions.
  • 3 Minute Thesis Competition: This popular event is limited to current students or recent graduates of higher degrees by research. Entrants present their thesis (in part or whole, in progress or completed) in strictly 3 minutes with a single power point slide. 3MT entrants may also be considered for inclusion in other parts of the program (using the same or separate abstract submission).  Please see below for further information.
  • Poster: Presenters will share their work as a poster. The format for posters (printed or electronic) will be finalised shortly. Check back in soon for further information.
  • Symposium:  Groups of abstracts presented orally within a pre-planned grouped symposium. Please note that all symposium sessions have been allocated from our 2021 call for abstracts.

3 Minute Thesis Competition

Entrants in the 3MT competition present their thesis (in part or whole, in progress or completed) in strictly 3 minutes with a single power point slide. Entrants will compete for the title of Best Presentation from our panel of judges, and a People’s Choice Award. The 3MT competition regularly draws a large audience and is a great way for emerging researchers to showcase their work. In the past we have been able to accommodate most, if not all, 3MT submissions.

3MT entrants can also submit their work in other parts of the program. However, we recommend tailoring your abstract appropriately (see preparation guide below) and submitting separately through the submission platform using your preferred presentation category.

ECR Researchers

You will be asked to indicate at the time of submission if you identify as an Early Career Researcher to determine eligibility for ECR award categories. In the health services research community there are a wide range of career pathways. ECR status is therefore based on self–identification. As a guide, researchers up to 5 years post PhD (accounting for career disruptions), or novice clinician researchers can comfortably be considered early career, as can experience clinicians who are emerging researchers

Describing Your Research

You will be asked during the submission process to select the setting, method and population (demographic and health condition) which best describes the topic of your presentation. This information will assist in allocating abstracts to appropriate reviewers and programming the conference sessions. Please select the best option from each list.

You can select “mixed/not relevant” for any domain that is not relevant to your topic, or “other” if none of the options provided describe your project. An optional text response box is available where you can enter your own key words if appropriate descriptors for your work were not available in the drop down list.

Preparing and submitting your abstract

Abstracts are limited to 300 words and should be structured using subheadings such as:

  • Introduction or background
  • Method
  • Results or findings
  • Implications or key message

Submissions for the 3 minute thesis competition ONLY can be presented as a free text outline without subheadings if preferred. Please cut and paste or type your abstract directly into the online submission form.
