WORKSHOP 1: Introduction to Health Economics
LOCATION: UQ Herston campus, Oral Health Building
The Health Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand (HSRAANZ) is pleased to announce a half-day workshop on Applied Economics in Health Services Design and Evaluation, to be delivered by members of the University of Queensland Centre for Health Services Research.
This workshop will help researchers understand the role of health economics and assist in grant writing and developing research proposals.
The content will cover the following topics:
- Economic methods relevant to healthcare sectors
- Economic evaluation and priority setting
- Outcome measurement
- Cost measurement
The content will be delivered by a team of experts from the Centre for Health Services Research, including Prof Tracy Comans, Dr Kim-Huong Nguyen, Dr Charles Okafor, and Dr Afroz Kermat.
The first half of the workshop will focus on various economic concepts and their relevance to the design and evaluation of health services and interventions. The primary objective is to raise awareness about the importance of incorporating health economic thinking and analyses right from the project identification and design phase through to implementation and evaluation. This approach is increasingly crucial for securing grant funding, successful trial implementation, and eventual scale-up of effective and high-value health services or interventions.
The latter half of the workshop will provide a practical experience of conducting a cost analysis. Participants will be guided through the process of selecting a case study from a set of prepared examples, and then assisted in conducting the evaluation by the instructors and teaching assistants. The primary focus of this section is to equip participants with the technical skills required to design and conduct a cost analysis independently or with minimal guidance. Participants will then work in small groups to compile the analysis results into a 3-minute presentation, which they will share with the group.

- Communication, dissemination and engagement
This short workshop is suitable for all researchers, clinicians and policy makers who want a better understanding of the core elements of Implementation Science and how these can improve the uptake and sustainability of evidence-based practice in healthcare.
