Welcome to the 2024 Governance Conference:

Mastering Human Dynamics in the Boardroom

Organisational systems are complicated enough, introduce people and the complexity and unpredictability quickly multiplies. The human factor is key.
We need to understand and master ourselves before we can hope to lead others and our organisations.

Rob Newman AICD
AISSA Governance Conference presenter

The educational governance landscape is constantly changing and navigating human dynamics in the boardroom is paramount. The 2024 AISSA Governance Conference is an exciting opportunity for chairs of boards, school leaders, board members and decision makers in our schools to come together to unravel the complexities of interpersonal relationships, communication and collaboration at the governance level.

We invite you to work with Rob Newman, organisational psychologist, leadership coach, board advisor, Australian Institute of Company Directors faculty member and leader of the Boardroom Mastery program, in a highly interactive, dynamic workshop setting. Participants will learn that human dynamics in the board room are not just about personal interactions, they are the catalysts for innovation, strategic thinking and the foundation for the creation of a positive boardroom and organisational culture.

This conference will enable boards and school leaders to:

  • Gain a profound understanding of how human dynamics shape boardroom interactions, decision-making processes and ultimately shape school culture.
  • Explore the behavioural personas typically seen in boardrooms and discover intricate connections between these individual behaviours, group dynamics, and the overall effectiveness of the board.
  • Uncover untapped potential and learn how to harness the strengths of diverse boardroom personalities through an interactive simulated board meeting and practical tools and strategies to navigate challenges, foster collaboration and create a positive school culture.
  • Hear from their peers. A panel discussion comprising current principals and board chairs will candidly explore the various facets of the Board Chair and Principal relationship and its impact on the school’s governance, leadership, and success. We are delighted that Kate Costello, high profile South Australian business leader and Adelaide Fringe Chair, will be a contributor to this discussion.

The school board has the critical responsibility of shaping the broader school culture and must understand that the values, behaviours and decisions originating in the boardroom have a ripple effect throughout the entire school.

Given this significant set of responsibilities, we strongly encourage entire boards to attend to collaborate, learn and grow together. In addition, school leadership teams and aspiring leaders are also welcome to enhance their understanding of effective leadership and strategic governance.

We look forward to seeing you and your teams there!
